About the Lab

The telecommunications lab – newly established as of Aug. 1st, 2004 – will complement the work on audiovisual networking that already as of today has been a focus of research at the DFKI and the Computer Graphics Lab.

The telecommunications lab thereby will be focused on an overall architecture for ubiquitous audiovisual networks, developing a consistent architecture for Quality of Service in unicast as well as in mulitcast and broadcast environments.
Areas of research will lie in the following domains:

  • Existing and future wireless network technologies
802.11a, 802.11n, 802.16 and UWB and their corresponding compliance frameworks WiFi, WiMax and Wi Media as well as interoperability guidelines like the DLNA will be introduced, analysed and improved w.r.t. the goal of enabling predictable transmission quality for time critical data.

  • Existing and future video-coding technologies
MPEG-4 Part 2 and 10 and SMPTE VC-9 will be analysed w.r.t. their applicability to rate-adaptive transcoding.

  • Existing and future rights management frameworks
Source and link protection technologies like AACS, CPPM/CPRM, DTCP, HDCP and others as well as upcoming rights management frameworks like MPEG-21, DMP or recent activities driven by industry will put obligations onto the content transmissin and the Quality of Service that deeply influence the applicability of the above stated technologies.
